The Society of Colonial Wars is a social, genealogical, and historical organization with chapters in 30 states, the City of Washington, and Great Britain. Our common business is conducted through our national organization, the General Society of Colonial Wars. The arms in the seal of the Maine society (on the left) are those used 1603-1688, 1702-1707, as Sovereigns of Stuart.
During the reign (1688-1702) of William III and Mary II they used an impaled coat of arms, her shield being as shown on the left, his 'defaced' with an inescutcheon of the arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The Maine Society chose to use these arms rather than those of either Sir Ferinando Gorges or the Massachusetts Bay Colony, thereby avoiding taking sides in that issue.
